Plank Flooring

Your interior design starts from the ground up and that’s why the flooring you choose is so important. Current trends show that hard flooring is an all-around preferred choice over carpeting as people are saying goodbye to “hard to clean” and easily damaged and hello to easy maintenance and beautiful finishes. Other than that, the sky is the limit for you. With that in mind, here are some great flooring trends that you should be looking out for.

Fumed Wood Flooring

Fumed flooring is so named because it goes through the process of fuming. This involves putting wood in a chamber where airborne ammonia is released. The wood reacts with the ammonia to undergo a color change which is unique depending on the type of wood and the environment inside and outside the chamber. The overall result is a rich, dark tone that enhances the natural grain of the wood. This effect of a stronger color and grain is one that we can expect to see more often over the coming years.

Bleached and Blanched Floors

These are a great alternative to the darker wood tones we are used to seeing. The process of blanching involves applying a chemical solution to the wood to get rid of the artificial dye or stain coating that gives it its color. Blanching gives wood a whitewashed look, but it does not take away from the natural wood grain that is still visible underneath.

Distressed Wood and Concrete

This is a type of flooring that may never go out of style due to the fact that it is perfect for hiding a multitude of sins. To create a distressed look, wood flooring is hand scraped. Then swirl and kerf markings are added, and planks are brushed to remove gloss and give floors a soft worn look. Distressed flooring is perfect for houses that are going for a rustic appeal. The distressed look can also be applied to concrete. Here, an artificial process is used to minimize the gloss and produce a worn-out looking surface. Distressed concrete floors are the perfect complement to a modern or industrial look.

Patterned Wood Layouts

We are all used to seeing flooring where planks are laid out neatly and side by side. Patterned wood layouts are setting the world of interior design on its ear as unique patterns are being featured like herringbone and chevron. Not only are these perfect for living rooms but they can work well in bathrooms as well.

Black and White Flooring

Black and white flooring is the perfect way to give your home a great vintage feel. Bold, graphic patterns are used to take this look into the 21st century mixing the old with the new.

The flooring of your home is so important, and it doesn’t have to be boring. Think of unique patterns and finishes that you can sure to give your home a look you can be proud of.
