Small SpacesIf you have a small space, it’s likely that you don’t have a dining room. This can be problematic when considering where you will eat your meals. It can become even more of an issue when you are looking to entertain. New trends in interior design are all about making the most of your small spaces and making room to eat and entertain are a priority. Here are some ideas of how you can create dining areas in small spaces.

Get Creative with What You’ve Got

You may not have a dining table, or the room to store one but don’t be afraid to use what you’ve got. Stools and a coffee table can make a great makeshift dining area, or you can just pull over a small table to one side of your couch.

Go for a Compact Model

There are tons of dining room tables that can expand and fold up when needed. Think of tables that fold out or are collapsible. Some can even be mounted to the wall and fold out for dining purposes. Leaves can also be added to make for a larger table.

Use Visual Blending

You may be able to fit a dining room table into your small space but are worried about giving your dwelling a cluttered appearance. You can minimize a busy look by using colors that already exist in your home. For instance, you can use dining room furniture that is painted the same color as your walls or use a wood tone that matches your floors.

Embrace Minimalism

Another way to avoid a cluttered look is to go with a minimalist interior design. Using other furnishings and accessories with minimal designs will prevent the table from overpowering the room giving it an all-over balanced feel.

Emphasize Intimacy

Instead of trying to create a sense of space in your rooms, go the other direction by giving your dining area a cozy feel. You can do this by embracing intimacy with layered textiles and low lighting making it look like an inviting nook where you can enjoy meals.

Move it Against the Wall

We typically think of dining room tables as being central to a room or area providing diners access to all chairs. While this is ideal, when dealing with a smaller space, you might not have this luxury. However, you can still make the best of what you’ve got by moving the table against a wall or windowsill.

Take it Outside

Have a small indoor space and a large outdoor space? Move your dining room onto the patio or into the garden. Al fresco dining can be a great way to entertain in the warmer weather.

Living without a dining room area can be challenging but with the right out of the box thinking, you can create a space that you and your guests will be happy with. What tricks do you use to make the most of your small spaces?
